Meet Your Bid Writing Team

We, Helene Nalson and Lisa Varley, are Funding Footsteps.  Lovely to meet you.

Lisa and I met about 15 years ago (scary!!) working for a third sector organisation. We both worked as part of a team looking after sales and retention of members, the customer.

We both left this organisation for different careers but then our paths crossed again working for a local community interest company.  We both have different strengths which adds to our success. Lisa became part of Funding Footsteps in its infancy, when there was a lot of plate spinning going on.  From this point Funding Footsteps evolved and we both found a love and passion for helping and supporting the 3rd sector and decided to make Funding Footsteps our business. 

The beauty of our working relationship is we are very similar in our outlook to our working life.  We simply want to help those who help others.  We fully understand the charitable sector.  We know how hard work it can be, how challenging.  But the rewards are massive – providing communities with food, clothes and facilities they need.  Helping youngsters get into employment.  Supporting the vulnerable and those in greatest need.

We want to do our little bit to help change and improve lives, using our experiences and knowledge.

HELENE NALSON - Founding Partner
My career from leaving university was in the private sector, managing budgets, managing large teams, working to targets and on a national level. This all changed after having my two girls, life was challenging enough, but I wanted to focus my career on something that would give me more. Having all that but still have a business. Working for the third sector gave me this. Funding Footsteps was born and after spending time working as a "hobby" it soon grew to be what it is today, and will continue to grow and develop. 

LISA VARLEY - Partner
My career has been spent in the finance and accountancy world, I have worked in huge corporates, tiny one man bands and everything in between but without doubt the most rewarding of these roles have been within the not-for-profit world. At the height of the pandemic my then role of Finance Manager was made redundant, with really nothing to lose and lots to gain I decided to enrol in an undergraduate bsc (hons) in accounting and finance. It was around this time Helene asked me to help with some funding applications for her first ever client, I enjoyed the work and here we are now.
